Octocon teams up with The Children's Book Festival

2008-04-23

Don't be surprised if you see more young fans at Octocon than usual this year.

Octocon will be featuring as part of the programming of the Children's Book Festival, which runs for the entire month of October.

As Octocon is back in the city centre we are teaming up with Children's Books Ireland, organisers of the Festival, to help publicise the great fantasy and science fiction works being published for young readers, many of which are by home-grown Irish authors.

Octocon has a long history of inviting writers of great books for children: Anne McCaffery, Tanith Lee, Orson Scott Card and Terry Pratchett among them; the classic works of children's literature have often features science-fiction and fantasy themes. With all that in mind; we thought cross promoting with the children's book festival would be a great fit.

Familiar faces and new places...

2008-01-07

Well, it's the New Year, and we have a few things to tell you guys.

First of all, we are delighted to welcome back Peadar O'Guilin and Derek Gunn. Last year was their first time to visit with us, and we're glad they had a good time. Both are interesting and funny people, so we plan to make full good use of them in our programming schedule for the weekend!

And speaking of that, we are also excited to have back the always brilliant John Vaughan. A veteran of Octocon, I have it on good authority that he is already preparing his famous Video Vault of Horror to take us to through the trenches of the hard-fought battle that is the years worst movies.

And this year we have something brand new to Octocon, somewhere that those wounded by the horror of the video vault can go to recuperate - throughout the weekend The Fannish Living Room shall be in operation. It's an area that the con-goers mould to make into the perfect lounge for a fan. We'll provide the comfy seating, tables and shelves, and we'll ask all of you to contribute the books, fanzines, games and knick-knacks. You can get more info on the navigation bar on the left there. The aim is to make somewhere that any fan would like to sit in and argue sci-fi and fantasy.

Now of course, we need a venue to hold all of these fine events and discussions. And this is a large piece of news - Octocon is relocating. Maynooth and the Glenroyal Hotel have been good to us these past few years, but we thought it was time we moved back to being central. So we are pleased to announce that Octocon 2008 is going to be held in the Royal Dublin Hotel, on O'Connell street. This has been Octocon's home before, and we're looking forward to making it our home again.

Come back here regularly for more updates as they come in, and we should have a big one real soon..

See you in October,
Brian
Chairman Octocon 2008
