Counting Down...
2008-10-06 Two weeks to go before Octocon 2008!

Everything is ticking over nicely in the background, though unfortunately we've had some problems booking the seven thousand ice-skating elephants for the opening ceremony so we'll probably just have to make do without them.

Elephants (or lack thereof) aside, we've got plenty of exciting activities lined up. Workshops, discussion panels, games, readings and more, covering a wide range of genres and mediums (I mean, media - Wait, is that right? It must be: "medium" is the name for someone who tries to contact the afterlife. And also it's a shirt-size. But then again, "media" often means magazines and such that have taken on the vital task of telling us what our favourite movie stars and pop stars are having for breakfast...).

Books and comics, movies and TV, internet and computer games - all of these and more will be receiving the great Octocon treatment. We'll be looking at science fiction, fantasy, horror and all things in-between, with a special focus on fiction for younger readers. October is, after all, the time of the Children's Book Festival. Already many of Octocon's guests have been travelling the country visiting schools and libraries, bringing the word to the people (and the word, in case you haven't guessed, is "Read!").

If you're one of those younger readers, feel free to attend Octocon dressed as your favourite character! There'll be a special prize for the most imaginative and inventive costume. Consider it a dry-run for Halloween! Store-bought costumes are fine, but we'd really like to see home-made costumes - even if your costume is made out of old corn flake boxes (actually, that would be great!). Now, we're not going to say what the prize is yet, because we haven't decided. It'll be something pretty cool, though!

Update!
We've added two new guests to the list:
Science fiction author James P. Hogan and comic writer/artist Alan Nolan!
